Austin Children Receive Free Eye Exams and Glasses

More than 100 students at Campbell Elementary received free eye exams today, and around 45 received new glasses, as part of a pilot program in Austin.

The project, called Kids Vision for Life, is a collaboration between local and statewide entities organized by the Austin Community Foundation, and seeks to provide children with free eye exams and glasses. The designer glasses were all donated by a company in Italy to the Essilor Vision Foundation, which is donating the lenses and eye exams.

Austin Skyline To Dim For Earth Hour Tonight

Austin's skyline will be noticeably darker from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm as the city participates in Earth Hour, an annual event held across the globe to raise awareness about energy conservation and climate change.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the Austin area until 4 p.m.  The advisory warns of 30 mph winds, with wind gusts up to 40 mph. As the cold front moves through south central Texas, winds are expected to gradually die down throughout the evening.

Children Volunteer in the Community Through the Little Helping Hands Organization

Outside Austin’s Center for Child Protection, a group of kids and their families planted flowers and mulched flower beds. While most young children spend their Saturdays playing with friends or watching cartoons, six year old Grace Nugent was out volunteering.

“One of my favorite parts was to help and serve the community,” Nugent said.

Gov. Rick Perry Announces New Emergency Legislation at Anti-Abortion Rally

Gov. Rick Perry designated pre-abortion sonograms as emergency legislation today at the annual Rally for Life. The rally marks the 38th anniversary of what Perry calls the “tragic” Roe v. Wade court decision, which gave women the legal right to abortion.
