In a sign that victims of September’s 34,000 acre Bastrop wildfire have received the majority of services they need to begin their recovery, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Disaster Recovery Center in Bastrop will close next Friday.

"Just the physical presence will be gone," FEMA spokesperson Ericka Lopez said. "However, we will still have other federal representatives that will be doing public infrastructure works, as well as additional work in the Bastrop area and other Texas wildfire affected areas."

Occupy Austin protestors clash with police overnight...First African American firefighters in Austin honored...and UT pounds Kansas in college football.

Overnight Arrests in Occupy Austin Demonstration

Dozens of Occupy Austin protestors were arrested early this morning, as police began enforcing a new rule limiting  how late the demonstrators can hand out food. Memos from city officials last week prohibited sleeping on the city hall mezzanine and distributing food after 10:00 p.m.

Demonstrators told the Austin American-Statesman that APD officers warned them at 9:45 last night that the food rule would be enforced. About 12:30 this morning, police tried to shut down the food distribution table. When the protestors refused, officers started making arrests.

As many as 40 were reportedly arrested, charged mainly with trespassing. The only resistance occupiers apparently gave police was passive. Police Chief Art Acevedo arrived at the city hall plaza in the pre-dawn hours. He told reporters that there were no injuries in the mass arrests.

Today's windy and very dry conditions don't just have firefighters on the alert.

Perry, Texas GOP Success in Trouble?

Credit Photo by Ben Philpott for KUT News

In 1994, five Democrats were elected to statewide offices, including the Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and Comptroller.

Since then, Republicans have managed to shut out Democratic candidates.

That includes four wins in a row for Rick Perry, one as Lieutenant Governor in 1998 and three as Governor. In Perry's case, he's never lost an election, either as a Democrat or as a Republican. But are Perry and the Texas GOP becoming victims of their own success?

Big 12 Conference Invites TCU

Credit Image courtesy glenharper http://www.flickr.com/photos/glennharper

And the college football conference shuffle continues.

The Big 12 college athletic conference would like Texas Christian University to join them. Presidents and chancellors of the conference's nine remaining member schools formally invited TCU to join this morning. If the school accepts the invitation, they would fill the gap left by the departure of Texas A&M from the Big 12 next summer.

The Horned Frogs currently play in the Mountain West athletic conference. A year ago, the school decided they would leave that conference for the Big East. But in a release on the TCU's athletic website, Chancellor Victor Boschini, Jr. said that joining the Big 12 would rekindle old in-state rivalries with Baylor, Texas Tech and Texas. He says he looks forward to more conversations with the conference before accepting the invitation.
